500 Engine

When the 500 engine was introduced, much was expected of it. However it arrived in quite a low state of tune. Whilst there was a welcome boost in torque, power was only a little higher than that of the 350 Sport. Not only that, but the transmission had lost a ratio and was now only a five speed. Whilst it could be argued that the wide spread of torque meant that even the 250 didn't need six gears, it was part of the charisma of the bike. It was hoped by many that a Sport version of the engine would appear, with a higher state of tune and the sixth gear. Whilst the latter was incorporated in the 500 sei (six), both touring and Sport versions shared the same state of tune.

The last evolution of the V twin was the 501 engine (actually 507cc). With Gilladoni barrels along with many other small improvements it is arguably the best engine.
